Talking about money with your partner can be tricky.
For most of us, talking about money with our partners doesn’t come easy. We each bring our own emotional baggage and beliefs about money into our relationship making this a really challenging topic to navigate. This was the same for my husband and I, two years into our marriage and we could never seem to get on the same page. We couldn’t seem to talk about money without sparking a fight. It seemed like an impossible challenge. So I decided to avoid it all together by taking over our finances and not letting him in.
So why not just avoid it all together?
If you really care about your relationship, you can’t afford to do that.
Money is one of the leading causes of stress in a relationship as well as one of the main causes of divorce. It doesn’t matter how much money you have, if you’re not on the same page with your partner when it comes to money it can ripple out to affect almost every area of your relationship.
I found out pretty quickly that leaving my husband out of our financial life wouldn’t work. It was just as much his money as it was mine. We needed to find a way to talk about money in a non-anxious way. So, we started going out for lunch one Saturday a month for budget breakfast and it changed everything. We ate burgers and drank Arnold Palmers while checking in with our budget, planning for our financial goals, and discussing any financial issues and opportunities that came during that month.
Our money dates changed transformed our marriage!
This concentrated time together to talk about money brought us a new level of intimacy and relieved tension throughout the month because we could always save any questions or issues of our next money date. The way you connect with your spouse about money matters. Getting on the same page when it comes to money will not only help you work together to meet your financial goals, but it can also bring a new level of intimacy and connection to your relationship.
Release the tension by inviting an expert to lead the conversation.
The one thing that I wished we had when we started our monthly money dates was a mentor. Someone to guide us through the conversation and remind us that we both had something to say and something to learn. It’s too easy to let the power dynamics in your relationship or your own limiting beliefs rule the conversation. So, I decided to give you what we never had and teach you all that I’ve learned over the past few years of money dates.
