10 Things I Learned From 10 Years with My Husband

On this day ten years ago, I was preparing for my first date with an art student I had met online, Tyler. We were headed to a pasta bar located on the University of Minnesota campus known for its delicious food, live music, and funky, artistic flair. I agonized over my outfit. I really liked this guy but wondered if I was really “cool enough” to date an artist. I settled on jeans, a nice shirt, and my sparkly Toms: classy and casual with a little bit of artistic flair — just like the restaurant.

Six years ago yesterday my husband and I got married on an unseasonably warm fall day. We had a Sunday morning wedding complete with bloody marys, paper flowers, a brunch buffet, and even some mid-day dancing. I got to walk down a spiral staircase in my gorgeous silk dress to find the love of my life waiting for me under a trellis of flowers. I don’t think the day could have been any more perfect.

To those of you couples who keep some (or all) of your finances separate, this week's blog post is just for you! Keeping finances separate can be a healthy decision for your relationship. However, just because you choose to keep some (or all) of your finances separate, doesn't mean there isn't work involved. Couples I meet who keep most of their finances separate are usually reluctant to admit it. It’s as if they feel it’s a relationship red flag that they don’t pool all of their money together. I’m not sure why joined finances is still seen as the only solution for married couples. I get it: Every night in quarantine can feel exactly the same, so sometimes it’s nice to change it up. Over the last year, we’ve made Wednesday night our “takeout night.” It’s also our date night, so it makes that night feel like more of an occasion. A few weeks ago, I was sitting at the kitchen table eating lunch and watching Netflix on my phone when the screen suddenly turned white. Out of nowhere it just died. My husband spent hours attempting to revive it to no avail, it was dead as a doornail. Luckily we have insurance on our phones so I was able to put a claim in that night and receive my new phone in about 48 hours. ⁠ ⁠ In that 48 hour period without my phone we learned a lot. Outside of my embarrassment of how ridiculously dependent I am on one object, one of our other key learnings was that I am the main contact on so many of our accounts (including our bank and savings accounts) and without me my husband doesn’t have access. Similarly, we also found that many of the websites we use every day (including the app we use to manage our passwords) require two factor authentication with my phone.⁠ ⁠ We’ve worked so hard to be transparent, financially and otherwise, in our relationship. However, this situation taught us that we have some pretty serious gaps. It wasn’t that I didn’t want my husband to have access to these accounts, I most certainly do, I just hadn’t gone through the process to make sure he had access.⁠ ⁠ Whether you hold your finances jointly, separately, or take a hybrid approach, it’s important to create a healthy level of transparency and access when it comes to finances in your relationship. I invite you to use this week’s post like a financial audit to see where the intentional and unintentional gaps are in your financial access. Give me a Nicholas Sparks book or an 80s/90s rom-com starring Meg Ryan and I'm set. 3. In 2019, my husband and I sold our 4-bedroom suburban home and downsized to a 2-bedroom apartment in downtown Minneapolis. It was one of the most freeing decisions we've ever made! 4. Travel is one of my husband and my favorite things to do. It's been tough not being able to see family and friends or explore new places this year.
